Wingspread 4-5 inches; wings rich red-brown bordered with 100 black -and-; white spots scattered through the 100 black -and-; veins of wings outlined with 100 black -and-; body 100 black -and- with white spots.The male American goldfinch is a lemon-yellow bird with a 100 black -and- crown and tail and 100 black -and- wings that have white bars; the female is a dull olive-yellow with 100 black -and-ish wings, prominently barred. In the European goldfinch, the sexes are similar. The face is red, the head and tail 100 black -and- and white, the back brown, and the wings 100 black -and- and yellow.
Description: Russet red saddles along back, bordered in front and back with 100 black -and- rings; between 100 black -and- rings is sulphur yellow ring; neck sulphur yellow edged with 100 black -and-; front of head rufous with 100 black -and- spots; snout yellowish; grows to length of 25 inches Habitat: Sandy soils, cotton fields, corn fields of bayou bottoms, edges of cypress swamps, and in old logs |
