Add Shape And Texture: Fall color can be found in trees like maples and rowans, but there are vines of equal brilliance and even herbaceous plants such as euphorbia and gillenia. Fruits and berries need not just be a fall feature.
Foliage plays a vital role in the garden, for not only does it create a neutral backdrop against which colorful flowers will show up, but it has a much longer period of interest than flowers and berries and so forms the framework of your planting. Indeed, evergreen leaves are a good way of providing year-round interest.
Foliage is particularly useful for texture, and there is no better way of breaking up blocks of color than by introducing leafy plants. There are many types whose leaves are handsome in shape, agreeable in color and pleasing in texture. This scheme is fresh and dramatic, taking a backdrop of white and mixing in dark metal furniture and touches of cobalt blue on cushions and tiles. The carpet has a slightly speckled effect, so it's more practical (it will hide dirt better) and adds some variety to the whiteness, while a carved screen adds texture and shape.
No garden would be complete without herbaceous plants, for they act as fillers around the framework trees and shrubs. In most gardens the two types of plant are intermingled in mixed borders, the best solution where year-round interest is required. They can also be planted on their own in island beds, used as ground cover or grown in containers; indeed, their diversity makes them suitable for every garden. Perennials are valued for both flowers and foliage. Not only are they a major source of color, but they also add shape and texture, sometimes even scent, to the garden. |
