Advanced Style: England.—When the Normans invaded Sicily, they found themselves in a land of centuries-old cultural traditions ; these they accepted and merely grafted on them a few details of their own style. The situation in England was different; the Norman culture, in architecture at least, was more advanced and monumental than the Anglo-Saxon. This successful competition has achieved a total of 2570 applications from more than 100 countries and 508 submissions of projects received concentrated in 130 finalists. The revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 had scattered abroad the French Huguenot silversmiths, and some of the most proficient had settled in England. Among them were Paul de Lamerie (1688-1751), whose shop produced work of exquisite finish in the most advanced style of the day, and Anthony Nelme (d. 1722), who specialized in soup tureens and teapots.
