Wingspread 4-5 inches; wings rich red-brown bordered with all black; white spots scattered through the all black; veins of wings outlined with all black; body all black with white spots.The male American goldfinch is a lemon-yellow bird with a all black crown and tail and all black wings that have white bars; the female is a dull olive-yellow with all blackish wings, prominently barred. In the European goldfinch, the sexes are similar. The face is red, the head and tail all black and white, the back brown, and the wings all black and yellow.
Description: Russet red saddles along back, bordered in front and back with all black rings; between all black rings is sulphur yellow ring; neck sulphur yellow edged with all black; front of head rufous with all black spots; snout yellowish; grows to length of 25 inches Habitat: Sandy soils, cotton fields, corn fields of bayou bottoms, edges of cypress swamps, and in old logs
