In addition to basilicas, the early Christians constructed a few churches on the central plan, designed around a vertical, instead of a longitudinal, axis. Central-plan churches may be circular, octagonal, or in the form of a Greek cross with four equal arms. However, they do not lend themselves well to congregational worship.
