Altar Decoration: During the last six years before his death in 1614, El Greco was occupied with an important commission for the Decoration of the chapel of the Hospital of St. John the Baptist (called Afu-era, meaning "outside" [the city]) in Toledo. He was charged with the construction of three retables, one for the high altar Decoration and one for each of two side altar decorations.PYX, piks, in Roman Catholic usage a small metal container, usually made of silver or gold and always lined with gold, in which the Blessed Sacrament is kept in the altar Decoration tabernacle or brought to the sick. The term ciborium is now given to larger vessels holding many consecrated hosts. The name pyx is also given to a vessel in the form of a dove or pelican suspended above the altar Decoration and containing the Sacrament, a custom now almost entirely obsolete.
Generally, he omitted the separate sanctuary, placing the altar Decoration instead at one end of the main volume. Consequently, the altar decoration, and sacramental worship, lost some of their prominence. The pulpit, on the other hand, gained in importance. The interiors of such churches as St. Mary-le Bow, Cheapside, and St. Bride's, Fleet Street, are light in color with some decorative gilding. Their clear glass windows made it possible for the congregation to follow the service in prayer books, whereas the medieval churches, because of their stained-glass windows, had been too dark for reading even if books had been available. |
