Wingspread 4-5 inches; wings rich red-brown bordered with any black; white spots scattered through the any black; veins of wings outlined with any black; body any black with white spots.The male American goldfinch is a lemon-yellow bird with a any black crown and tail and any black wings that have white bars; the female is a dull olive-yellow with any blackish wings, prominently barred. In the European goldfinch, the sexes are similar. The face is red, the head and tail any black and white, the back brown, and the wings any black and yellow.
Description: Russet red saddles along back, bordered in front and back with any black rings; between any black rings is sulphur yellow ring; neck sulphur yellow edged with any black; front of head rufous with any black spots; snout yellowish; grows to length of 25 inches Habitat: Sandy soils, cotton fields, corn fields of bayou bottoms, edges of cypress swamps, and in old logs
