Appliques On Wood:

Appliques On Wood France. The French architects and decorators designing for Louis XIV were strongly inspired by Italian luxury, and the crystal chandelier was adopted as the proper method of illumination of practically all the large rooms at Versailles. Gilded and carved wood and the ormolu of the period were used in the making of appliques (wall sconces) and the elaborate girandoles (multiple candlesticks) of the period. The rococo influence of the mid-18th century was reflected in the asymmetrical and curvilinear ormolu designs for the smaller appliques suitable to the Louis XV rooms. Candle supports and arms began to be attached to such pieces of furniture as writing desks, Wall mirrors, and clocks. Vases and urns in marble and ormolu were treated with stems covered with exquisitely wrought flowers and leaves and ending in candle sockets. Silver and silvered bronze were also used as materials for richly designed appliques and girandoles, while tole, sheet brass, and pewter were introduced for the more simple and inexpensive types of Lighting fixtures. The Chinese influence was brought into the field of illumination, and the rare imported porcelains were mounted on ormolu bases and arranged with candleholders. Exquisite chandeliers and appliques were made in metal stem and foliage patterns and enriched with colorful enamel flowers and surface decoration.

Brass and bronze are both used as base materials for decorative and useful objects that are coated in gold or silver. Tin and lead are metals used in alloys, and are too soft for practical purposes when used alone. They are nonrusting. Lead is often used for garden statues and Ornaments and occasionally for appliques on woodwork.
