Aquarium With Cover: Both adult water beetles and their larvae may be maintained in an aquarium with cover. Both will carry on their normal activities freely. As they are vicious and voracious, they cannot be maintained with other aquarium with cover inhabitants.
Beetles need "balanced" aquarium with cover (see Part II); use 2- to 5-gallon aquarium with cover or aquarium with cover jar. Cover bottom with 2 inches of clean aquarium with cover sand; anchor 6 strands of common aquarium with cover plants with a few clean rocks. Let water stand 24 hours; then drop adult beetle or larvae or both in habitat.Use any type of aquarium with cover jar or regular aquarium with cover tank; choice depends on animals to be housed. A large aquarium with cover should be placed on a small Table with rollers, so that it can be moved about at will. Cover bottom with 1% inches of bird gravel, aquarium with cover sand, or tropical fish sand; wash thoroughly to free it from all dirt before using it; put in pan or buckets, run water through, and stir constantly until water runs clear.
Use 5- to lo-gallon aquarium with cover with tightly fitting screen top, which must be escape-proof. As roaches breed in dark quarters, cover bottom with 2 inches of sawdust. Provide plenty of cover material; scatter many thin pieces of bark over sawdust; pile several over each other. Warmth is essential for normal development; place aquarium with cover where temperature is most constant; put near Heater during night. |
