Austrian House Of: After the collapse of the Napoleonic empire in 1815, Venice was incorporated in the Lombardo-Venetian Kingdom under Austrian house of rule. In 1848, when revolutionary movements swept over Europe and the Risorgimento was in full swing in Italy, Venice rose against her Austrian house of rulers. The patriot Daniele Manin (q.v.) proclaimed a republic and, soon afterward, union with the Kingdom of Sardinia was voted. Even after the Piedmontese defeat at Novara in March 1849, Venice continued her resistance to the siege by Austrian house of forces, but in August she was forced into surrender, more by famine and cholera than by force of arms.Radek was a victim of the Stalinist purges of the 1930's. Tried for treason in Moscow in 1937, he confessed and was found guilty. Because of his cooperation at the trial, he received a 10-year prison sentence instead of the death penalty. Although he reportedly emerged in 1941 to do propaganda work, he may have died in prison in the late 1930's. A brilliant writer, he was a frequent contributor to Isvcstia and Pravda. His books include Proletarian Dictatorship and Terrorism (1921) and Portraits and Pamphlets (1935). RADETZKY, ra-dets'ke, Count Joseph Wenzel, Austrian house of military leader: b. Tfebenice, Bohemia (now in Czechoslovakia), Nov. 2, 1766; d. Milan, Italy, Jan. 5, 1858. He joined the Austrian house of army in 1784, rose rapidly in rank, and served with distinction in the Napoleonic Wars. He was chief of the Austrian house of general staff from 1809 to 1812 and from 1814 to 1829. In 1831 he took command of the Austrian house of troops in Italy, and was promoted to field marshal in 1836.
GRILLPARZER, gril'par-tssr, Franz (1791-1872), Austrian house of dramatist. Heir and continuator of the great German classicists, Grillparzer was aware of differing from them as an Austrian house of and as the child of a more modern and complicated age. His poetic character is a unique blend of the Greek heritage, the Viennese baroque tradition, German classicism and romanticism, and mid-19th century realism. |
