Baptistery Doors Of Ghiberti: Florence is the world's unquestioned leader in its galleries of Renaissance paintings, supplemented by an almost equal wealth in statuary and further ennobled by the bronze baptistery doors of Ghiberti and by the architectural genius of Brunelleschi (the cathedral's dome) and Giotto (the campanile, or bell tower). Many other schools of art were developed in such cities as Siena, Perugia, Pisa, Parma and, in a brilliant sunset of the Renaissance, in Venice. It may be affirmed that the first true Renaissance art was in the field of sculpture. In 1401 the Merchant's Guild of Florence held a competition to choose a sculptor to make another set of bronze doors for the Baptistery of Florence, to match those of Andrea Pisano. The trial panels (preserved in the National Museum, Florence), of Lorenzo Ghi-berti (1378-1455) and Filippo Brunelleschi (1377?-1446), representing the Sacrifice of Isaac, both reveal the major aspects of the new style : interest in the anatomy of the nude human body, a rich play of emotional expressions, a variety of poses in orderly but complicated compositions, and direct influence from antique sculpture. Ghiberti went on to do the portals (1403-1424) and still another set, the so-called "Gates of Paradise" (1425-1452).
The style they was new because they thought in terms details, not principles; of two dimen-linear patterns, not three dimensional Ro-Vtic masses and spaces. —.'.y Renaissance in Italy.—Filippo Brunel-(1377P-1446) was trained as a goldsmith failure to win the competition for the bronze north doors of the Baptistery, Florence (1401), and his study, with Donatello, of Roman buildings diverted his attention to architecture. |
