Began Building Great The Mayan civilization grew into one of the most complex theocracies the world has ever known. Archaeologists have not been able to determine the exact date when the Maya entered the Neolithic Age, but it was undoubtedly many centuries before Christ. Unlike many other Neolithic peoples, however, these early Maya began building great structures as well as polishing their stone implements.

Since the days when the Druids, or some other shadowy folk, erected their strange menhirs and dolmens in Britain and when Phoenician mariners came here in search of tin, things have been happening. They began to happen in legend when King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table (which piece of furniture you'll be shown in Winchester's Great Hall!) dominated the scene, and they began to happen in historical earnest when King Alfred the Great appeared, in 871, and saved Anglo-Saxon England, for a while, from the marauding Danes.


This year, the competition will focus on public buildings in the coastal environment of Southern California. Students entering Challenge 1 will design an Environmental Museum and Interpretative Center and students entering Challenge 2 will design a Park Office and Snack Bar. Both buildings will be located in the new Orange County Great Park, in Irvine, California. The competition objectives are to encourage and reward excellence in architectural planning and design that integrates environmentally responsive design strategies. Competition participants will have the opportunity to explore energy efficiency as a basic standard of building design, incorporate principles of sustainability in the choice of building materials, water use, building design, and building site, investigate new building materials & methodologies that
