Better Location Information:
A single line of position can often be combined with other information to provide better location information than a DR position. If the depths are varying relatively uniformly, a depth value can be combined with an LOP for an estimated position.With the advent of earth-oriented satellit< radar (as well as optical and infrared syste offers great promise of providing global weatl information. Such information can be in the forj of storm and cloud structure data or of clues I the location of regions of large changes in form of energy in the atmosphere.
Raster charts have the advantage of appearing essentially the same as a paper chart with which all skippers are familiar—a minimum of rethinking is required. A vector chart has the advantage of being constructed in a number of "layers," each of which has some different type of information, such as the shoreline and channels, aids to navigation, depth information, etc. All layers of a vector chart are usually viewed together at first, then any layers containing unnecessary information can be eliminated to reduce the level of complexity and make the chart easier to read and work with. The disadvantage is that the appearance of the chart—symbols used, etc.—is different from a paper chart and may take some getting used to. The big feature of both types is their ability to show on the chart display the present location of your Boat as derived from GPS, DGPS, or other electronic navigation systems. Some electronic charts also have the capability of displaying "pop-up boxes" with information on aids to navigation and other landmarks. Techniques have been developed that will allow both types of charts to be updated as new information in published in Notices to Mariners; in some cases this can be received via the Internet.
