Black Ants:

Black Ants Locate ant hill. With a small spade, dig straight down into hill. This cuts through passages; ants become excited, come tumbling out, and fall into pit. Have ready a straight-sided, large-mouthed jar (square-shaped one best). Place jar in pit and fill in any empty space around it with dirt. Ants now tumble into jar. If colony is healthy, ants may be collected in a few minutes; if weak, must visit second nest. Take no more ants than pets will eat in 2 days; ants survive for short time only when piled on top of each other in close quarters and kept without food.

Black ants of many species make excellent food for many small animals, especially horned lizards. Ants are not easily reared in the large quantities required for feeding purposes, but they may be captured by the half pint at a time. Such a quantity supplies a half-dozen lizards with food for two or three days.

Although many species in this order of insects are injurious, a great many more are beneficial. For instance, the wild bees are vital pollinating agents, while the domestic bee is not only a pollinator but also supplies man with food and beeswax. Ants, although they are constantly thought of as pests, are in reality more beneficial than injurious since they dispose of enormous numbers of dead and decomposing organisms. The metamorphosis of bees and ants is a complete cycle—egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Bees and ants adapt themselves readily to captivity when properly housed and cared for throughout the year.
