In the European goldfinch, the sexes are similar. The face is red, the head and tail black and white, the back brown, and the wings black and yellow.
Northern Florida to Princess Anne County, Virginia Description: Shell relatively short and broad, oval; carapace more or less keeled with rear edge sharply notched; dark brown to black with pattern of transverse light bars; plastron yellow with deep black, smudges on lateral edges; head and legs brown to almost black with yellow stripes; large yellow patch on head behind eyes; reaches shell length of 5-7 inches.
