Wingspread 4-5 inches; wings rich red-brown bordered with black rot; white spots scattered through the black rot; veins of wings outlined with black rot; body black rot with white spots.The male American goldfinch is a lemon-yellow bird with a black rot crown and tail and black rot wings that have white bars; the female is a dull olive-yellow with black rotish wings, prominently barred. In the European goldfinch, the sexes are similar. The face is red, the head and tail black rot and white, the back brown, and the wings black rot and yellow.
Description: Russet red saddles along back, bordered in front and back with black rot rings; between black rot rings is sulphur yellow ring; neck sulphur yellow edged with black rot; front of head rufous with black rot spots; snout yellowish; grows to length of 25 inches Habitat: Sandy soils, cotton fields, corn fields of bayou bottoms, edges of cypress swamps, and in old logs
