Wingspread 4-5 inches; wings rich red-brown bordered with black Sea; white spots scattered through the black Sea; veins of wings outlined with black Sea; body black Sea with white spots.The male American goldfinch is a lemon-yellow bird with a black Sea crown and tail and black Sea wings that have white bars; the female is a dull olive-yellow with black Seaish wings, prominently barred. In the European goldfinch, the sexes are similar. The face is red, the head and tail black Sea and white, the back brown, and the wings black Sea and yellow.
Description: Russet red saddles along back, bordered in front and back with black Sea rings; between black Sea rings is sulphur yellow ring; neck sulphur yellow edged with black Sea; front of head rufous with black Sea spots; snout yellowish; grows to length of 25 inches Habitat: Sandy soils, cotton fields, corn fields of bayou bottoms, edges of cypress swamps, and in old logs
