Wingspread 4-5 inches; wings rich red-brown bordered with black with row; white spots scattered through the black with row; veins of wings outlined with black with row; body black with row with white spots.The male American goldfinch is a lemon-yellow bird with a black with row crown and tail and black with row wings that have white bars; the female is a dull olive-yellow with black with rowish wings, prominently barred. In the European goldfinch, the sexes are similar. The face is red, the head and tail black with row and white, the back brown, and the wings black with row and yellow.
Description: Russet red saddles along back, bordered in front and back with black with row rings; between black with row rings is sulphur yellow ring; neck sulphur yellow edged with black with row; front of head rufous with black with row spots; snout yellowish; grows to length of 25 inches Habitat: Sandy soils, cotton fields, corn fields of bayou bottoms, edges of cypress swamps, and in old logs
