Both Color Woodcuts:

Both Color Woodcuts Practically all the famous artists have produced in this medium as well as in oil, and it is universally used at the present time. Water colors make delightful decorations, and must be judged on an art basis. Woodcuts. These were the earliest means of making prints. The line design is drawn or pasted upon a pearwood block and the necessary furrows are cut out with a Knife or graver, to leave only the line in relief. Woodcuts are used for impressions upon paper and textiles. Lines are bold, and prints may be made in black or color. The great period of woodcuts occurred in Germany during the life of Albrecht Diirer (16th century). However, excellent woodcuts are extensively made today. In wood-engravings lines are cut in a boxwood block. The design is printed from the untouched surfaces. In woodblocks, the block is cut away to leave the design intended. The surfaces are inked and pressed on paper. In color printing, separate blocks are used for the various colors.

Graf depicted the wild and varied experiences of the Swiss mercenaries in his engravings and boldly designed woodcuts. Some of his woodcuts were published as Woodcut Passion (1503-1506), and over 100 of them are extant. Graf's violent and energetic style often led to an ornamental distortion of form, which is evident in his depiction of armor and in decorative design. Though he is known to have produced goldwork, no authenticated pieces survive. A painting, War (c. 1515; Basel), is the only example of his work in oils.

Miss Greenaway's first success came with the publication of a collection of valentines, The Qtiner of Love (1875). The turning point in her career was the publication of the children's album Under the Window (1879), for which she furnished both color woodcuts and verses. It ran to 150,000 copies, including French and German editions.
