A pet cat should not be given freedom to wander out of doors through the night. A well-trained cat, kept in its quarters, is prevented from mixing with strays or other prowlers and bringing home "foreign" fleas and diseases. Freedom at night is neither necessary nor desirable when the cat is given the privilege of running free during the day.Peer-group pressure from die children can also be used to encourage the apparendy uninterested parent to join die scheme. One infant school set up a 'Book bug club', with all die children who were reading at home wearing special badges saying Tm a book bug'. In mis particular school the idea worked very well, bringing in many parents whose children had nagged them into joining the scheme so diey could have a badge like all the others! Once the school was satisfied, however, that the maximum possible number of parents was participating (having used all other possible ways to encourage them in), die teachers made sure that every child who wanted to join became a 'book bug'. Once the whole school was in die club, it its enthusiasm for, and commitment to, home reading without suggesting undue pressure.

And then from one species of autumn crocus comes saffron, the magic spice worth more than gold. Yet for all their splendid histories these are plants still perfect for the autumn garden.
