Not so, however, acts the poor man, with his little box of very little negatives brought home modestly in his waistcoat pocket. Therewith he sits him down at a table, having a compound achromatic microscope before him . . . and then . . . wanders at will, truly the monarch of all he surveys, over the various parts of each picture; recalls the circumstances under which it was taken; discovers characteristic detail which he never dreamed of before; and then—each picture you will remember having been taken square—he decides whether a positive copy should be shaped as a long, i.e.Grant longed for active duty, however, and on May 24, 1861, tendered his services to the U. S. government, suggesting modestly that he was "competent to command a regiment." Failing to secure such an appointment, he accepted from Governor Yates the command of the 21st Illinois Regiment, quickly brought it under excellent discipline, and did good service against guerrillas in Missouri.
Some of the home conditions that may be related to school children's problems were brought out in an extensive study by Rouman (109, 1955). Although there is no one-to-one relation between a certain kind of home condition and a specific behavior, certain problems seem to be associated with three parental factors. The children, especially the youngest, from homes where mothers were employed seemed to lack a cordial relationship with people in general and had a tendency to substitute fantasy for success in real life.
