Burrow Into Soil:

Burrow Into Soil Cicada Killers or Golden Digger Wasps are rather terrifying-looking wasps more than an inch long. They burrow into turf, often on banks, in late summer. The females sting and paralyze cicadas, store them in underground tunnels where they provide food for the young wasps. Recommended control is to inject a teaspoonful carbon bisulphide (highly inflammable) or of Cyanogas powder into each hole and plug it immediately with soil. Crawfish or Crayfish are troublesome in some areas in the South. They look like miniature lobsters and live in burrows in wet soil, the top of each burrow being surrounded by excavated earth. At night they leave their holes to feed on plant and animal food. Control as for cicada killers. See preceding paragraph.

After gnawing teeth are in use, place pet in chipmunk cage (see Part IV), but give plenty of freedom in room. Fill cage with 12-14 inches of leaf mold or other clean, rich soil (soil from forest Floor is best); moisten soil when it becomes dusty, but do not allow it to get wet. Change soil at least twice yearly. Scatter several large, flat rocks about for pet to burrow under. NEST: In the wild, is made in ground in hollow rotting log or stump. Obtain log or stump from woods and place in cage; log or stump should have hole at either end or in sides.

When caterpillar is ready to pupate, it ceases to feed, the skin becomes dull, and the large blood vessel along back pulsates visibly. Soon after, it crawls from plant and begins to burrow into soil. Keep soil damp all through, but not wet. When all caterpillars have burrowed, remove screen wire and clean away old food plants.
