Catalan Style Of Architecture: In Barcelona, an aggressively bold Catalan style of architecture, whose chief exponent was Antonio Gaudi, developed in the early part of this century. See the unfinished Church of the Holy Family (Sagrada Familia), with its four enormously tall fluted pinnacles, and the fantastic Palacio de la Musica (Calle Alta de San Pedro) and the occasional Gaudian apartment houses on Paseo de Gracia. The style consists, in part, of wild undulations and "weeping plaster" effects like stalactites that have dripped for aeons in a high wind.ROCOCO, ro-ko'ko, or ROCAILL, rokal-e', in architecture a name given to the debased style of Decoration which succeeded the first revival of Italian architecture. The orr mentation consists of panels with their mo ings broken or curved at the angles and fill with rock-work, leafage, shell-work, musk instruments, marks, etc. This style prevail in Germany and Belgium during the 18th « tury and in France from the time of Henry ] to the Revolution. In departing from simplic: the true principles of Decoration were violati hence the bizarre character of this decorati soon failed to please.
Architecture, painting, and sculpture all in various ways reflect the revolution that took place in Chinese civilization in the first half of the 20th century. Architecture. In the hundred years following the "opening up" of China to Western influence in the 1840's, many buildings put up in cities penetrated by Western influence were uneasy mixtures of Chinese and Occidental styles. The Chinese timber frame does not adapt to traditional Western brick and stone, and architects often achieved a pseudo-Chinese flavor simply by capping a Western-style building with a Chinese roof. Government buildings erected in Nanking and Shanghai in the 1930's, and some universities, show a better understanding of traditional architecture, although this "Chinese Renaissance" style was still a compromise. |
