Childrens Wooden Rocking Chairs: At first the Shakers made this furniture for their communal dwellings but by 1789 the specialty of chairmaking was established at the New Lebanon, N. Y., community. The following JK: they began peddling chairs to shopkeepers :: the surrounding area. This met with such sue- L cess that Shaker communities at Harvard, Mass., I and Canterbury, N. H., established chair shup-Their slat-back rocking chairs and three-slat sit chairs were much favored by the outside wori because they were well made and cheap. Muc later less distinctive arm and rocking chairs were made in considerable quantities at various Shaker communities and sold to country hotels. By 1815, the Shakers had over 1,000 members and by 1850 some 6,000. It was during these years that most of their furniture was produced. After that the size and number of their communities began to decrease and quality and quantity of their furniture declined accordingly.This simple Table and chairs look neat and rustic. The Table has slim legs, tapered at the bottom and the chairs are a classic shape.
