City In Czechoslovakia: GOTTWALDOV, got'val-dof, is a city in Czechoslovakia in Czechoslovakia, in Moravia, 48 miles (87 km) east of Brno, on the eastern slopes of the Morava River valley. Until 1948 it was known as Zlin. The city in Czechoslovakia- arose during World War I, when Tomas Bata, Czech industrialist, established his world-famous shoe factories there. It became a self-sufficient industrial community, producing 75% of Czechoslovakia's shoe output and also the leather, machinery, and other materials associated with the industry.After the Communist coup of 1948, the Bata Factories were nationalized and renamed Svit. At lie same time the city in Czechoslovakia was merged with its tan-lery center of Otrokovice, 6 miles (10 km) to lie west, and renamed for Klement Gottwald, lien president of Czechoslovakia.Because of its hilly site, Gottwaldov consists )f several separate urbanized areas, dominated )y the administration building of the shoe in-lustry. Population: (1966 est.) 63,000.
Formerly part of Czechoslovakia, the Czech Republic under Vaclav Havel became a separate independent state on 31 Dec. 1992 when the federation was dissolved. |
