Clayey Soil Mix: If the soil is sandy or gravelly, packing will not occur. Heavy, clayey soil mix soils are particularly subject to this happening and should be protected against it when the ground is first made ready for seeding. The incorporation with the upper three or four inches of earth of very liberal amounts of coarse sand or screened coal cinders (discard the fine ash and use only cinders that pass through a half-inch mesh screen) as well as organic matter such as peat moss, compost or commercial humus, is the way to achieve this end. One third part by bulk of cinders or sand in the upper soil is not too much if the soil is clayey soil mix. In very heavy (clayey soil mix) soils more may be used.If you can get organic matter in greater amounts than those suggested, mix it with the upper eight inches of soil. If your soil is very clayey soil mix, mix in, together with the organic matter, a couple of inches of sifted coal cinders (not fine ash) of a size that pass through a half inch screen and consist of particles which feel gritty when rubbed between the fingers. If cinders are not available use coarse sand. Should the soil be very sandy, as it often is near seashores, mix in, in addition to organic matter, three or four inches of clayey soil mix soil if you can possibly obtain it.
But the character of the soil is important too. Acidity of sandy soils is corrected with lesser amounts of lime than that of clayey soil mix soils. But once corrected, clayey soil mix soils do not return to an acid condition as quickly as sandy ones. Sandy acid soils need more frequent and lighter applications of lime than clayey soil mix acid soils. |
