Copper Walls: This process, while achieving a high level of energy, has several drawbacks that will almost certainly be resolved by conversion to a cryogenic facility. First, the strength of the microwave radio bursts depends on supporting electrical currents in the copper walls of the pipe. These currents, however, are subject to considerable resistance from the copper, thereby decreasing the efficiency of the accelerator. In a cryogenic tube the walls of the pipe will have no electrical resistance.Historically, the open-hearth furnace largely superseded the Bessemer converter, and the oxygen converter is now in process of superseding the open-hearth furnace. Copper Converter.—In the copper converter, copper matte (a complex of copper sulfide and iron sulfide) is oxidized to copper. As in the Bessemer converter, air is introduced below the liquid surface, but from the side instead of the bottom.
Copper is a soft, orange-colored, tarnishing, but non-rusting metal, which is considered everlasting. It was one of the first metals known to man and was used before iron. It is said the ancient Egyptians cut their Granite with copper chisels which they hardened by a method now unknown. Nearly all the nations of antiquity used copper alloys in the making of articles of household use, weapons, coins, and statues. |
