Ducting Materials: DUCTING MATERIALSThe ventilators, ducts, and cowls must be installed so that they provide efficient removal of explosive or flammable gases from bilges of each engine and fuel-tank compartment. Intake ducting must be installed to extend from the cowls to at least midway to the bilge, or at least to the level of the carburetor air intake. Exhaust ducting must be installed to extend from the lower portion of the bilge to the cowls in the open atmosphere. Ducts should not be installed so low that they could become obstructed by a normal accumulation of bilge water (see Figure 2-1).
To create a flow through the ducting system, at least when under way or when there is a wind, cowls (scoops) or other fittings of equal effectiveness are needed on all ducts. A wind-actuated rotary exhauster or mechanical blower is equivalent to a cowl on an exhaust duct. |
