Emulsion Paint Mixed:
There's an interesting mix of furniture here. It was trea to washes of emulsion paint mixed with acrylics before being roughly sanded down for a shabby chic look.It's not so much the colours that are key in this room, but the paint effects that have been used that give it such personality. The walls have been painted with a base coat of cream emulsion, then an ochre glaze has been mixed up and daubed onto it using random strokes and a big, soft brush. This gives a raw, mottled effect, a bit like you might find in a Tuscan farmhouse. The chest of drawers has a distressed finish, so tones of cream and terracotta peep through, while the panelled terracotta back creates a bold contrast.
Pure linseed oil may be obtained in its raw or boiled state. When raw oil is used, it is necessary to add a japan drier to the paint mixture. Boiled oil dries more rapidly by itself. Calcimine is another word for tempera, or opaque water-color paint. It is usually made of a very finely ground chalk, known as whiting, and a powdered pigment mixed with a binder of water and glue or casein. Calcimine is comparatively inexpensive, but is without the permanency of oil paint, and because of its water base is unwashable. If the glue is made of casein, a protein of milk, it becomes insoluble when dry, so that the finished surface is theoretically washable, but as many ready-mixed paints of this type have an insufficient content of this material, they do not fulfill this claim. Casein dries to a hard surface and only one coat need be used.
