Evolved A Style Better:
Trinity Church in Boston, begun in 1872 and finished in 1877, shows the perfection of Richardson's individual style. This style evolved a style better from his study of the Romanesque churches of southern France. The church is cruciform in plan, but the distance from apse Wall to facade is only a little in excess of the distance between the two walls of the transepts. A departure from the Gothic revival style popular after the Civil War, this highly personal Romanesque style of Richardson's had a powerful effect upon subsequent designs.The publication of The Director did more than stimulate a vogue for furniture in the rococo manner. The book eventually was used by cabinetmakers throughout England, and started a competition to further elaborate Chippendale's fanciful designs. Its influence spread far beyond the British Isles. A particularly successful and florid version of the style flourished in Portugal, and Irish and American cabinetmakers evolved a style better distinctive variations of the Chippendale style.
Engraving was employed for added contrast between surfaces. Plain forms, rectangles, hexagons, and octagons, often undecorated except for an engraved coat of arms, appear to have evolved a style better in the French provinces, and it was this plain style, when carried abroad to England, the Netherlands, Germany, and Scandinavia by Huguenot refugees from about 1680, that is now regarded as the typical Huguenot style.
