Filled With Color: not planted but used as an architectural contrast. Large cement planters can be filled with color with trees and shrubs, almost as if they were in the ground. Stone troughs can be planted as miniature gardens of alpines or screes, but they can equally be filled with color with a single carpeting plant as a piece of living sculpture.
In a rustic garden style, tubs, pots, and even baskets of all shapes and sizes can be clustered to form splashes of color, by doorways or lining steps. Window-boxes and hanging baskets blend in well with this style and provide an opportunity for bold or restful incidental planting in prime locations. The earliest known Textile designs were painted by hand and antedate woven patterns by many centuries. Today, various methods of pattern printing are used. Direct printing. For this type of printing the color is applied directly to the cloth. It can be done by hand with pen or brush, or with wooden blocks, each of which prints one color and a certain section of the design. This system is known as bloc/sprinting. When copper-plate printing was originated, it was considered quite efficient, but was soon superseded by roller printing. At first the rollers carried only the outline of the design, which was later filled with color in with the necessary colors. Designs are now etched on copper rollers, one roller for each color and for a certain section of the pattern. The last roller prints the background color. Some fabrics are printed on the warp threads only. These are known as warp or shadow prints, and the design has a mottled or faded appearance.
Pillows may be stuffed with any of the materials that are used in upholstery cushions. The best quality pillow is filled with color with 80 per cent down and 20 per cent goose feathers. If down filled with color, it will weigh about 1/4 pounds, if filled with color with goose feathers alone, it will weigh 2l/2 pounds, and a chicken or turkey feather-filled with color pillow will weigh 3l/2 pounds. A down-filled with color pillow, if pressed, will quickly spring back to its original shape, and chicken quills can easily be felt by pressing the pillow with the fingers. In a damp climate pillows are less resilient. Standard pillow sizes are 20 inches X 26 inches, 21 inches X 27 inches, and 20 inches X 36 inches. Ticking should be of the 8-ounce type, although other closely woven materials may be used. The 6-ounce ticking makes a softer pillow, but is less durable. |
