Food On Soil Of Habitat: The most comfortable habitat for young turtles, and the one which most nearly resembles the native one, is the woodland terrarium. One or two young turtles may be equally comfortable in the woodland habitat of a handmade vivarium box (see Part II).
Young turtles sold in pet shops and markets in the fall of the year have been dug out of the soil of their nests with the result that they may appear sluggish and refuse food on soil of habitat. They should be allowed to bury themselves in the soil of the terrarium to complete hibernation, and they should not be disturbed until the following spring. They will emerge from the soil voluntarily in the spring and will be ready for food on soil of habitat.Use woodland habitat of small terrarium (see Part II). Cover bottom with layer of coarse sand; top with thick layer of good soil so that pet can burrow. Retreat—Required; place sections of moss over soil; across one corner of habitat pile a few pieces of old bark and a few flat rocks. Moisture—Necessary; sprinkle soil and moss frequently to keep them slightly damp. Warmth— Important; place habitat where it receives some direct morning sunlight; avoid too much sun, exposure for long periods.
During winter, sprinkle soil heavily to simulate winter rains. Retreat—Necessary for live food on soil of habitat which is placed in habitat and hides there during the day; plant a few patches of thick-growing mosses on bank of soil; lay 2-3 small, flat rocks and pieces of rotted bark among mosses. |
