Found Grow Ing: Man also found grow ing that certain constraints affected not only how much food he could grow, but also where he could grow it. Crops needed fairly flat and fertile land if they were to flourish. They also needed adequate rainfall and appropriately long growing seasons. Since the moisture requirements and growing seasons of various crops differed quite widely, certain crops grew better in particular regions of the world than in others.THEY ARE immensely varied in character, some being tiny shrubs, some herbaceous plants, others bulbs, corms, or tubers. Though the majority enjoy open sunny places and well-drained soils, suitable rock plants can be found grow ing for almost any situation in the garden, including those that are moist and shady. The fact that rock plants have developed from wild plants brought from many different lands accounts for their fascination with collectors, who can grow a wide variety of plants with different origins in a small area. It is not essential to have a rock garden in order to grow rock-garden plants. Many will grow just as well in ordinary beds, provided the soil is suitable and they are not overrun by larger plants. Dry walls and raised beds are also satisfactory substitutes for rock gardens and may fit more appropriately into the design of small gardens, including even those of formal design.
Give very little direct sunlight; keep in cool location; northeast exposure best. Algae that grow on glass sides of aquarium help reduce light; scrape off from front glass only to allow observation. Can occur in a brief time. Never allow plant or animal matter to decompose. Remove all surplus food immediately after feeding animals. Use long wooden forceps or glass dip tube. Common in tide-pools. Locate one on loose rock small enough to bring in; use Knife to remove from rock, taking care not to injure body. Barnacles: Common along rocky coasts. Grow in colonies on dead shells, on rocks, and on wood. Sometimes found grow ing on small loose rocks which can be picked up; otherwise use Knife to remove. |
