Frame House: The oldest house-in the city is Wakefield, a frame structure erected in 1760 by Joel Lane, from whom the land for the capitol site was purchased, and in whose house the state assembly had met in 1781, in the darkest hours of the American Revolution. Preserved as a historic shrine is the small, frame house in which was born Andrew Johnson, 17th president of the United States and one of the city's own sons. Johnson is again honored with two other sons of the state, Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk, in a monument in Capitol Square, unveiled in 1948.A collection of botanical paintings lines the hall wall, adding colour and detail. Although they appear to be hung in a random pattern, they are in fact cleverly lined up to create strong horizontal lines running from frame to frame. This ties in well with the horizontals of the understairs storage, and helps lead the eye from the door into the house.
Raising of seedlings in a cold frame or a greenhouse, then planting out in the open, or as domestic plants, is an interesting hobby. But the amateur with limited time will prefer to buy his young flower and vegetable stock from a nursery when the seedlings have been hardened off in a cold frame and are ready to plant out. Choice of procedure will depend on the amount of ground to be filled. If this is extensive, economy can be effected by raising seedlings in the home, a c-!J frame, or a small greenhouse. Hundreds of f ering plants can be raised from seed at small but the time spent in potting and repotting roots are well formed is considerable. |
