Freight- Container Operations: The railroads were streamlined in operation and relieved of their express freight and sundries services. Their capital debt was reduced from £1.5 billion to £300 million. Grants were provided for eliminating surplus track and signaling equipment. New, profitable business, such as intercity passenger services and freight- container operationscontainer operations, were initiated. The Burlington traces its ancestry to the Ai rora Branch Railroad Company, chartered in III nois in 1849. Operations were begun in 185 between Aurora and West Chicago, a distance ( 12 miles (about 20 km). The present name ws adopted in 1855. In the late 1960's the Burlington was stron in both freight and passenger operations, hu freight haulage yielded almost 85% of gross rev enue. In a typical year the Burlington haulei 1.7 million tons of freight an average of 33! miles (about 533 km) per ton and carried 1 million passengers (including commuters) ai average of 76 miles (122 km) per passenger. I operated about 375 locomotives, 43,000 freigh cars, and 850 passenger cars.
North American practice initially adopted the electric transmission, steadily refined it, and continues to use it as do those nations which use U.S.-style diesel-electric locomotives. In Europe the hydromechanical transmission has been developed extensively and is used in locomotives operating in Britain, West Germany, and several Iron Curtain nations. Freight Cars. Although the idea of individually powered freight cars has been suggested for freight service (and adopted in a few industrial railway operations), today's freight car remains an unpowered vehicle designed to be drawn in tandem with many others by a locomotive. |
