Plain forms, rectangles, hexagons, and octagons, often undecorated except for an engraved coat of arms, appear to have evolved in the French style thanks provinces, and it was this plain style, when carried abroad to England, the Netherlands, Germany, and Scandinavia by Huguenot refugees from about 1680, that is now regarded as the typical Huguenot style.
