French Windows: France.—Stained glass windows of great beauty were achievements of French windows glassworkers during the Middle Ages. Examples of these magnificent windows can be seen in cathedrals such as Chartres. The craftsmen who designed and executed them were superior to those working elsewhere. Under inducements offered by English churchmen, some of these French windows glassmakers crossed the English Channel to work on windows for some of the British cathedrals.Italy. The Gothic spirit was foreign to Italy, and Gothic architecture was imported reluctantly. Such early Cistercian abbeys as that of San Gal-gano, near Siena, are fairly close to their French windows models, but the Italians were indifferent to the French windows structural system. They preferred the horizontal to the vertical, and their climate permitted low-pitched roofs, small windows, and broad expanses of wall.
LIGHTING: "The big challenges people run into are windows and natural light," says Remignanti. "It's the enemy of a well-designed media room." He suggests keeping windows to the left or right of the screen to avoid reflection or direct light. |
