From A Soil Analysis:

From A Soil Analysis Fertilizer will be necessary. Theoretically it is possible to determine from a soil analysis exactly which nutrients are lacking and in precisely what amounts each should be given. Practically, it doesn't work that way. In the first place, a soil test, which is simple and inexpensive to make, is not a complete analysis. A complete analysis is costly. And secondly, even a complete analysis does not completely reveal the availability of the nutrients in the soil. Common sense and judgment based on experience and empirical knowledge must still play a large part in determining which fertilizers to use and in what quantities. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potash are the elements most essential to add, and it is important that at least one half of the nitrogen be in "organic" form so that it is released comparatively slowly. Some of it may, often with advantage, be in more quickly available form, although excellent results are had from organics alone.

Green manuring means growing cover crops especially for the purpose of turning them under and converting them in the soil into humus. The humus is formed by the decay of the extensive root systems as well as the tops. To induce cover crops to make maximum growth, add fertilizer before each crop and lime if a soil test indicates its need. Begin your soil improvement program at any time. Lime if necessary and spread a complete fertilizer at the rate of about 50 pounds to each 1,000 square feet if it is a 5-10-5, or if it is of some other analysis at rates proportionate to the amount of nitrogen contained.

A Ladle Analysis An analysis of each heat of steel is to be made by the manufacturer to determine the percentage of the elements specified. This analysis is to be made from a test ingot taken during pouring of the heat. The chemical composition thus determined is to be reported to the Surveyor and is to conform to the requirements as specified for each grade in 44.5.3, 44.7.4 or 44.9.4.
