Fry Grow And Begin:

Fry Grow And Begin Goldfish are omnivorous, eating both plant and animal food. They spawn over a protracted period of time during the spring and early summer. The female lays from 500 to 2,000 eggs that stick to vegetation. They hatch in five to seven days, but the young remain attached to the plants for three more days while they absorb the egg yolk. After that, they swim freely and begin eating. The young, which are gray-green in color, grow rapidly and assume the color of the variety to which they belong after 8 to 10 months. They grow to about 12 inches (30 cm) and begin to reproduce when about 3 inches (7.6 cm) long or about one year old.

As the fry grow and begin to feed they are distributed to other troughs and finally to rearing ponds, constructed in a manner to insure cleanliness and an abundance of flowing water. The young are fed on ground liver and are transplanted when several months old. They grow rapidly, but in the East never attain the large size which they do in their native streams. They feed on insect larvae, etc., and may be fed artificially on chopped beef or liver mixed with corn meal. For angling purposes the rainbow is inferior to the brook-trout, but is a fair substitute.

Ability to pay attention is, of course, basic to learning. Children learn the habit of sustained attention by persisting at things that interest them generalizations and conclusions. They begin to learn about the world of work, and their helpers. In one school, children in the kindergarten not only studied how the milkman, garbage man, mailman, and other workers contributed to their welfare, but also investigated how they could help the garbage man, for example, to do his work more easily. Excursions stimulate quiet children to talk; shy children begin to share in the songs, stories, and projects that often grow out of an excursior;. Parents can help children satisfy their scientific curiosity by giving them time and freedom to observe and simple equipment such as a good magnifying glass, a prism, an inexpensive gyroscope, and magnets.
