The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 1967 indicated its concern about passengers who were killed by fire or asphyxiation in otherwise survivable airplane accidents by setting forth new safety requirements. These included an increase in the size and number of exits from a plane, a greater use of nonflammable furnishing materials, and better protection for fuel lines.
