Giving Color: Using lime to alter the color of wood is a traditional technique stretching back hundreds of years. Like staining (see opposite), pickling alters the color of the underlying surface without obliterating its most attractive feature, which is the grain of the wood. It can be applied to a Floor which is stained with color, giving color a very attractive finish over blues and greens.giving color instruction in art involves (1) encouraging a pupil first to observe form, color, and rhythm in his environment, (2) acquainting him with some productions that are only a little better than his own, (3) helping him to express in his art the principles of design and color, (4) encouraging his successful attempts, and (5) most important of all, accepting whatever he creates if it is a valid effort for him. This is not to advocate abandonment of self-criticism but to stress constructive self-criticism: "How can I say what I want to say more effectively?"
IN BLACK-AND-WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY as practiced today, no accessories are more widely used than color filters. Easily attached in front of your Camera lens, they are capable both of giving color your pictures more accurate tone values and of adding greatly to their effectiveness and charm. Color filters will serve you well in taking landscapes and other pictures, especially if you understand what they do and how they do it. This chapter covers not only these important devices but also other lens attachments which you will find equally interesting. |
