Good Border Plant: Chamomile, Chamaemelum nobile , has small, daisy-like flowers of white, cream, yellow or orange, and caraway Carum carvi (annual) is a graceful plant with flat, lacy heads made up of many tiny white flowers. Chamomile is a good border plant, flowering all summer. Attractive gray-green foliage makes it a popular plant for flower arrangements indoors.A BORDER needs a certain amount of space to be effective. The minimum requirements are 4 x 12ft. If the border is any smaller than this you should restrict the number of plants used to six or seven different types, ensuring that they provide a good mix of flowers and foliage over a long period of the year.
Such a border can be planted anywhere, even in open lawn, although where it can be viewed from each side there will be more restrictions on the types of plants you can use. Most usually a background wall, Fence or hedge will provide the necessary frame, and will also provide a windbreak, which is important when taller plants are being grown. The dedicated planner can devise a highly scented border devoted to one type of plant (such as the rose), or a theme— delphiniums, dahlias, chrysanthemums and roses, among those that immediately come to mind, but there are so many others that the gardener can be spoilt for choice. |
