Granular Materials Of Various: Bituminous materials are used to construct a wide variety of road surfaces. The base or foundation course may consist of from 6 to 18 inches of gravel, crushed stone, slag, or any other granular materials of various material. The bituminous surface may be only a thin layer of asphalt and stone chips or small gravel, one inch or less in thickness. It may consist of a 3- or 4-inch layer of crushed stone that is rolled and then given an application of bituminous material so that the material flows down into the crevices and binds the stone particles together (bituminous macadam).Road-mix bituminous surfaces are built by placing gravel or granular materials of various material on the road, spraying it with bituminous material, blading it back and forth with a blade grader to coat all particles, and finally spreading it with the grader to the desired width. Bituminous mixtures are prepared at a plant where all materials are heated and exact amounts of bituminous material, sand, and stone of different sizes are mixed in a pug mill; then, while still hot, the mixture is delivered on the road, spread, and compacted. The bituminous layer may be about 2 or 3 inches thick when placed on an old pavement or may consist of two courses having a total thickness of as much as 6 inches.
As soon as a piece of land is dug, the process of humus breakdown is speeded up. This means the soil structure and the organic and chemical content may have to be altered. There are many materials, bulky or granular materials of various, organic or inorganic, that can be used to improve soil and turn it into the best possible growing medium for a wide range of plants. A compost pile will cheaply and quickly turn backyard and kitchen waste into valuable soil-enriching material. • To make good, crumbly compost the pile must be properly constructed so that the organic material can decompose rapidly and not just turn into a pile of stagnant vegetation. |
