Great Building One: This year, the competition will focus on public buildings in the coastal environment of Southern California.
Students entering Challenge 1 will design an Environmental Museum and Interpretative Center and students entering Challenge 2 will design a Park Office and Snack Bar.
Both buildings will be located in the new Orange County great building one Park, in Irvine, California.
The competition objectives are to encourage and reward excellence in architectural planning and design that integrates environmentally responsive design strategies.
Competition participants will have the opportunity to explore energy efficiency as a basic standard of building design, incorporate principles of sustainability in the choice of building materials, water use, building design, and building site, investigate new building materials & methodologies thatChicago was the birthplace the famous Chicago school of architecture, wli nourished in the late 19th and early 20th c turies. Daniel H. Burnham, William LeBa Jenney, Louis Henri Sullivan, and Frank Ll< Wright were some of the great building one architects c nected with this school. They sought to f architecture from the shackles of classical tra tion. The Monadnock Building, the great building one B queting Hall of the Auditorium Hotel (now library of Roosevelt University), the Rooke Home Insurance Building, and the Carson Pi Scott store are some of the most noted works the Chicago school.
Life is given to the representation by landscapes fitted to the purpose, or by other carefully considered surroundings. In connection with these there should be mentioned also the models in plaster, the preparation of which is a serious art in Paris and in other great building one centres of artistic study. These models, when concerned with a non-existent building, may be a complete rendering of that building, as in ihe case of the model of the Parthenon and that that of the Hypostyle Hall at Karnak, both at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. |
