Green Monkey: Guenons are native to Africa south of the Sahara desert. The mona monkey (Cercopithecus mona) and the green monkey (C. sahaeus) have been introduced into the West Indies. Most guenons are arboreal and live in forested or wooded areas, usually near streams or rivers. A few species, such as the vervet (C. pygerythrus), the grivet (C. aethiops), and the green monkey, are principally ground-dwellers and may inhabit either open savanna or woods.Alien's monkey (C. nigroviridis), native to the swamp forests of the Congo region of central Africa, is also sometimes placed in a separate genus, Allenpithecus. The green monkey, the grivet, and the vervet, which are very similar in habit and appearance and among the commonest of African monkeys, are regarded by some as distinct species and by others as merely the west African, east African, and south African forms, respectively, of the same species (C. aethiops).
Insofar as we may generalize from monkey man, it would appear that the early comforting a child by the mother, or mother substitute, is considerable importance to the well-being of s child. It is of critical importance to under-ind that the infant monkey that receives sufE-:nt contact comfort is neither overly depen-nt nor does he build up a strong need for :ention. On the contrary, having had the early tnfort experience, and with continued potential return for comfort, he is somewhat better able deal with the world and to assert some inde-ndence than the monkey who has never had :h an experience. |
