Growing Plants: Trays of plants vary in quality enormously. Seedlings may be dried out and dying, they may be thin and spindly, they may have yellowing leaves, or they may be so far advanced that the roots are actually growing out through the base of the tray. Pick sturdy, compact plants that are growing evenly. Always select a full tray or a section of a tray, rather than loosely wrapped plants.Propagation and growing: chives may be raised from seed sown in shallow drills in spring and transplanted in early summer, or you can start with young plants and set them out in light, moisture-retentive soil. Water well in dry periods. Every few years, in the growing season to achieve a good flavor. Pinch out the growing tips to encourage leaf development. Tarragon is a perennial: cut down the plants in the late fall and cover with straw to protect from frost. Divide and replant every three years in fresh soil, or treat as annuals.
You are most likely to need to water growing plants— plants—in spring and summer rather than in the fall and winter But this is also the prime planting season for deciduous trees and shrubs, and it is a good idea to water them in well unless the ground is extremely moist at planting time. This is not necessary so much to keep the plant growing as to settle the soil particles around the roots in readiness for growth the following spring. |
