Hansa City: Lindau: This island town of Lake Constance has a smart casino, with a fashionable restaurant, and along the lake front a row of hotels, each with lake-viewing restaurant and garden. Hotel Reutermann is perhaps the best of them.
Liibeck: This lovely old Hansa City on the Baltic looks to near-by Travemunde, with its lush casino, for smart dining, but in the old city itself there is the quaintly ancient restaurant of the Schiffer-Gesellschaft[Skippers' Company), dating from 1535, and the Niederegger Cafe Kopf, whose marchpane is sent all over the world.HAJO HOLBORN Author of "A History of Modem Germany" Further Reading: Weiner, A., "The Hansa," in The Cambridge Medieval History, vol. 7 (London 1932). HANSEL AND GRETEL, han'sal, gret'al, is a German folktale appearing in the collection by the brothers Grimm (q.v.). A brother and sister are deserted in the woods by their impoverished father and wicked stepmother. They come upon a gingerbread house, guarded by a wicked witch. She locks Hansel up, preparing to roast and eat him, but Gretel tricks the witch and burns her in her own oven.
QUEZALTENANGO, ka-sal-ta-nan'go, Guatemala, city, capital of a department of the same name, the second city of the republic in size and in importance, 80 miles west of Guatemala City, at an altitude of 7,500 feet above sea level. It has a considerable domestic trade and manufactures of cotton and woolen textiles. A railway about 50 miles long connects Quezal-tenango with Champerico on the Pacific coast. The city was founded in 1524 by Spaniards, on the site of a native city; there are numerous interesting antiquities in the neighborhood. An earthquake destroyed the town in 1902, but it was rebuilt. Pop. 30,125. |
