Propagation and growing: treat sweet marjoram as a half-hardy annual. Sow seed under protection in early spring. Set out hardened-off plants in early summer in light but fertile soil in a sunny position. Sweet marjoram is useful for edging herb beds or raised beds of aromatic plants. Perennial species can be increased by cuttings of basal shoots taken in spring.Bedding displays can be simple or elaborate according to taste, and the patterns may be given permanent form by being edged with small shrubs such as box or lavender.BEDDING OUT means putting plants in the garden for a limited period only, while they are able to contribute most to the display, and then replacing them with other plants. Spring bedding plants are those that make their display from early to late spring; summer bedding plants are those that are at their peak from early summer to early fall. Beds can be filled with a number of plants of differing habits and, usually, mixed colors. Carpeting plants are used as a base planting, with taller plants employed to produce a second or third tier of flowers.
Propagation and growing: sow seed in late spring, in well-drained, rich soil. If seed is not required, remove the flower stems as they appear. Self-sown seedlings will grow freely if the plants are allowed to flower; if not, propagate them by dividing the parent plants approximately every three years or so. The seeds are ready to harvest when they have turned a gray-green color and have hardened. Cut off the whole flower head and dry slowly indoors.
