Hill-systen Plants Are Spaced:

Hill-systen Plants Are Spaced Cultivation.—Raspberries grow best in cool temperate areas in soils that are fertile, moist and well drained. They may be grown in solic rows or hedgerows or in individual hills. Plant: grown in hedgerows are spaced from 2.5 to i feet apart in rows 6 to 10 feet apart. Hill-systen plants are spaced from 5 to 6 feet apart in botl directions. Planting is best accomplished in th< very early spring while the new plants are dor mant. To maintain high production fertilizei must be applied annually. Bigger yields of largei berries have been associated with the use o: straw or similar mulches.

Don't plant trash. There are too many really good plants available to make room in your garden for inferior varieties. It's true that choice kinds often cost more, but they are worth it. If you must economize buy smaller specimens than you otherwise would, but get good kinds. You may be able to save by setting out fewer plants than you think you need. Makers of new gardens are often so anxious for immediate effect that they over-plant, forgetting that plants grow and soon crowd each other if they are not adequately spaced. Yet another possibility is to propagate at least some of your own plants. This is not practicable with all kinds but it is easy to start with a few groundcover plants, for instance, and multiply them so that before long you have many times the original number.

Even in an area with a short growing season you can start the gourds from Groups 1 and 2 directly outdoors after the last spring frost. They need a location with full sun and close to a water spigot, because the vines use lots of water both during their early development and when they are setting fruit. Soil should be reasonably rich, mixed with humus, and have good drainage. Plant five seeds in a little hill of soil, each hill at least 5 feet apart. This is important because all seeds will not be of the same quality. If you have any well-rotted manure, put a shovelfull underneath each hill before planting. When the plants are 3 or 4 inches tall, pick out all but the strongest three. Soon they will be reaching up for support and on their way.
