Chicago's growing public library system, which now has approximately 55 branches, is supplemented by several distinguished private libraries. Chicago was without a public library until 1873, when British donors sent 7,000 volumes to establish one. The library was originally housed in a water tank behind the Rookery office building at Adams and LaSalle streets. The main building public library building now stands on a beautiful site in Dearborn Park.A franchise owned by Gruppo Percassi, the new Ferrari store is located in the center of Milan in Piazza Liberty, a square about 160 ft. from the main building central street of the city, Corso Vittorio Emanuele. "Those 160 ft. have been the main building concern of everybody, because they were the reason why, until that time, the square had been completely isolated from the main building flow of people," says Massimo Iosa Ghini, principal architect. Counting on the magnetic lure of the Ferrari mystique for Italian shoppers, the designers confidently presented the brand with the highest possible visibility to the busy street. A Formula 1 (F1) car is exhibited on a crystal platform held by a curvilinear beam 28 in. above the Floor in the show window. Ferrari-red supergraphics swathe the building to grab the eyes, and bright Lighting contributes to visibility.
The broad main building thoroughfare, running southeast from the square called Terazije, bears the name Marshal Tito Boulevard and is a very lively artery lined with fine shops, office buildings and cafes, these latter being allotted generous sidewalk space in the manner of Paris or Vienna. Among conspicuous modern structures are the Parliament Building, the National Museum (with very rich ancient and modern collections), the big National Theater and exactly one modern skyscraper, the 12-story Albania Building, which serves as a landmark for tourists learning their way about.
